Carrot

Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) has made significant contributions in the development of improved cultivars and their relevant production, protection and processing technologies in fourteen mandated crops, covering cereals, coarse millets, pulses, oilseeds, fodder, fibre  and horticultural crops. These crop varieties have been widely adopted in their recommended areas / agro-climatic zones. 

Nantes

The tops are small with green leaves. The roots are half long, slim, well shaped (Perfectly cylindrical) and stumpy, abruptly ending in a small thin tail. This is orange in color, deliciously flavoured, fine grained, tender and sweet with small self coloured core. Flesh is orange scarlet in colour

Pusa Asita (IPC-126)

Self black core colour.

  • Yield is 30 t/ha

Pusa Nayanjyoti

This is the first hybrid developed by public sector in India. The roots are cylindrical, orange and have self-coloured core. It has very high carotenoid content (7.552mg/100g). Sowing can be done from April-August in hills and November-December in plains

  • 35-45 t/ha

Cost:

  • Rs. 800/Kg of seeds

Economic benefits:

  • High carotenoid content

Status of commercialization/IPO rights:

  • Released by HP state Variety Release Committee in 2009

Pusa Rudhira (IPC-122)

Gives more than 50% higher yield, self core.

  • Yield is 33 t/ha

Pusa Vasuda

First public sector tropical carrot hybrid developed using CMS system. Self red coloured carrot hybrid. High in total carotenoids, lycopene, TSS and minerals. 

Pusa Vrishti (IPC-126)

It is a new heat tolerant tropical carrot variety. It is suitable for early sowing beginning in July under North Indian plain.

Pusa Yamdagini

It is early in maturity and high yielding, roots are long slightly tapering to semi-stumpy, orange-coloured and has self coloured core. It matures in 90-100 days. Sowing time: April-August (Hills) October-December (Plains)
