Cabbage

Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) has made significant contributions in the development of improved cultivars and their relevant production, protection and processing technologies in fourteen mandated crops, covering cereals, coarse millets, pulses, oilseeds, fodder, fibre and horticultural crops. These crop varieties have been widely adopted in their recommended areas / agro-climatic zones.

Golden Acre

Plants are short stalked with small frame. The leaves are smooth, cup shaped and dark green having 12-15 unwrapper leaves on head formation with prominent veins. Heads are very compact, round interior clear white and of excellent quality which becomes ready in 60-75 days depending on the time of transplantation.

Performance Results:

  • Average weight per head varies from 750g to 1kg and the yield is 20-24 t/ha

Cost(per unit of weight):

  • Rs. 800/Kg of seeds

Economic benefits :

  • Heads are very compact and matures early

Hybrid- Pusa Cabbage Hybrid-1

Round white cabbage SI based hybrid, this is resistant to black rot disease. It is late bursting cultivars and has high field retention capacity. Suitable for HP, J&K and north Indian plain.

Performance Results:

  • Yield: 30-40 t/ha

Cost:

  • Rs. 6000/Kg of seeds

Economic benefits:

  • Early maturing with better field staying capacity

Status of commercialization/IPO rights:

  • Released in 2012 by CVRC

KTCBH-81

They have compact round head with less frame size. They have high field retention capacity. Suitable for cultivation in North India during Rabi season

Performance Results:

  • Yield: 50-55 t/ha

Cost:

  • Rs. 6000/Kg of seeds

Economic benefits:

  • Medium maturity with better field staying capacity

Status of commercialization/IPO rights :

  • Under multi-location testing

Pusa Drum Head

This is late, main season variety with uniform heads, requiring 90 days of maturity. The heads are large, flattened or drum shaped and solid, but less solid than the heads of golden acre. It is a short stemmed variety with wider frame and less outer green leaves having prominent veins. It posses field resistance to black leg caused by Phoma lingam

Performance Results:

  • 30 t/ha

Cost(per unit of weight):

  • Rs. 800/Kg of seeds.

Pusa Mukta

Developed from intervarietal cross of EC 24855 and EC 10109. Pusa Mukta is an early variety with medium sized, solid round heads. It is a slightly later than golden acre. It has resistance against black rot and is suitable for areas where this disease has been a limiting factor.

Performance Results:

  • 25-30 t/ha

Cost(per unit of weight):

  • Rs. 800/Kg of seeds

Self-incompatibility (SI) lines

They can be used commercially for F1 hybrid seed production in cabbage. They possess very strong ‘S’ allele

 Performance Results:

  • Chances of selfing / sibbing is very less

Cost:

  • Yet to be decided

Economic benefits:

  • Strong and stable SI system
